DiscoVery: Unearthing new music

The alt/indie scene is alive and well. With recent releases from The Shins, Alt J, and forthcoming releases from LCD Soundsystem and The National, the sub-genre has been reinvigorated, albeit in a new direction – less guitars, and more synth and electronics, but who’s complaining?

Here’s what we’re listening to:

Arcade Fire – Everything Now

Canadian indie rockers release Everything Now off the upcoming fifth studio album. The best part is that it’s shot right here in South Africa, providing the barren backdrop of the six-minute long video. Hopefully the band makes a return to our shores with a show or two!

Husky – Ghosts

The first single off the new album, Punchbuzz, Aussie indie-folk duo Husky release this neatly-textured Day of the Dead themed video for their song Ghost. The perfect soundtrack for your next road trip.

Phoenix – Ti Amo

French indie pop maestros Phoenix release Ti Amo, ahead of their first new album since 2013’s Bankrupt!Ti Amo is a romantic song about the tragedy of unreciprocated love and desire – 100% lover – 0% violence.” Play this loud!

The War On Drugs – Holding On

The Philadelphia band’s new record A Deeper Understanding is set for release on 25 August this year on the back of the critically acclaimed third album Lost in the Dream.

Beach Fossils – Down The Line

The Brooklyn indie rockers’ follow-up to 2013’s Clash the Truth, Somersault is more dreamy than Mac Demarco’s This Old Dog. Down The Line is true shoegaze.

Alt J – 3WW

Like Massive Attack’s Teardrop intro, 3WW’s congruency is obvious in the minimal groove that crescendos into a captivating lullaby.
